The University of Bologna (Unibo) is the oldest in the world, and it’s full of history. Founded in 1088, with famous popes and poets in the alumni group, this is a great institution in a beautiful setting. Interesting programmes and courses mix perfectly with quality teaching from talented, award-winning lecturers.

For students who love classics and ancient history (and want to get one of the best educations in the world in this area of study), it has to be Bologna. The institution ranked number 20 in the world in this subject in the QS World University Rankings.

The University of Bologna was also number one in the country of Italy for arts and humanities, and life sciences and medicine. Everyone enrolled has the chance to follow in the footsteps of Dante and Lord Byron with some excellent literature, arts and humanities courses, or to do some important scientific research in the academic world of medicine.

Thanks to dedicated tutors and prepared career counsellors, graduate employment rates at Bologna are strong, and students from every background are welcome. 12 per cent of enrolled students at the University of Bologna are international, and with a Times Higher Education International Outlook rating of 52.1 per cent, it’s clear that these students enjoy and are drawn to Unibo. With satellite campuses based in Brussels, Shanghai, New York and Buenos Aires as well as the main Italian setting, the university’s reach is global.

Bologna, home to one of this university’s four main campuses and the place it was named after, is a beautiful place. As is the full area that the institution covers, including smaller places like Ravenna and Forli. Students can enjoy the city or relax close to the coast. There are lots of great accommodation options, and there’s plenty of support for international students to make sure they’re fully settled in.

With general entry and English language requirements that people from different backgrounds can achieve, the university supports international undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering first-cycle, second-cycle and single-cycle degree courses. The variety of subjects, support services and language services is among the best offered in Italy.

Aiming to share accessible education opportunities with all its students, Unibo is an exciting option for students who want to open their minds in one of the most interesting countries in Europe. Fun, beautiful and friendly, Bologna is a great city to study in.

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality at Unibo is fantastic. With a student-lecturer ratio of 24 to one, its attention to detail and drive to deliver great academic results is what sets the university apart. Ranked at number 167 by QS World University Rankings 2023, Bologna prioritises high-quality teaching and excellent resources.

The university follows the Quality Assurance Programme, which aims for constant improvement of the experience of academic staff and students. Overall, the University of Bologna works hard to create a culture of quality teaching across all schools and faculties. This gives teachers all the tools and equipment they need to give the students the best education they can.

There are four stand-out departments and areas of research at the University of Bologna, according to QS World University Rankings by Subject. In the top 50 globally, it ranks:

  • 20th for classics and ancient history
  • 39th for dentistry
  • 40th for modern languages
  • 44th for agriculture and forestry

The university also ranks as the number one institution in Italy for arts and humanities and life sciences and medicine, and both the Department of Legal Studies and the Department of Economics have been recognised by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MUIR) as ‘Departments of Excellence’. No matter which course or programme they decide to study at Bologna, students will be supported and encouraged every step of the way, always given a great education.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements at the University of Bologna vary from course to course. Specific entry requirements can be found on each individual course page, but generally, international students must have a GPA score of 2.5 or above to be considered for admission.

University entry requirements also change depending on the type of course a student wants to study. For a first-cycle degree course, a domestic student must have at least a five-year secondary school diploma qualification or a four-year qualification with an extra year if their chosen programme accepts it. International students must have valid foreign qualifications, which can include:

  • At least 12 years of schooling in a foreign secondary or high school
  • A qualification awarded to them after two years of successful higher education in a foreign system.
  • Results from entrance exams and academic tests, if they are required by the student’s country of origin.

For a postgraduate degree, international and domestic students must provide evidence of an undergraduate degree or similar university qualifications. If any prospective international students have questions or need help understanding the university requirements, the International Desk can guide and advise them.

English Score Required

At Unibo, teachers teach in either English or Italian (this depends on the course). Students should make sure they know the language of study in their subject area before they apply and will need to prove their understanding before they can be accepted for admission.

For English-speaking programmes and courses, a certain English score is required. An undergraduate applicant needs an IELTS overall band score of 6.5 or above or a TOEFL score of no less than 80, while a postgraduate applicant needs an IELTS overall band score of 7 or above or a TOEFL score of at least 100.

87 courses are taught in English at the institution, including an MA in autoengineering, a combined programme in pharmacy, and an MA in wellness, sport and health. Some courses and programmes, like an MA in archaeology and cultures of the ancient world, are taught in Italian and English, so an understanding of both languages will be required.

Unibo’s Language Centre aims to provide students at all levels with the necessary level of language ability to get the most out of their education and will be there for international students who are struggling with the language and/or the language requirements.

Admission

Like the entry requirements, the admission process for students applying to Unibo changes depending on the course that they want to study. Generally, student admission involves the payment of an application fee and meeting certain criteria (specifics depend on student background).

The average tuition cost per year for an undergraduate student is around EUR 1,960. It’s EUR 14,570 for a postgraduate. Certain academic merit requirements make students exempt from tuition fees. There’s a full guide to tuition fees for international students on the Unibo website.

Before they apply, international students should know which documents they’ll need to share to be eligible for university admission. For undergraduates, this list can change depending on their home country but usually includes:

  • A high school/secondary school diploma or the equivalent
  • English translated transcripts of any essays or certifications necessary
  • A declaration of value/any relevant document to the qualification
  • Proof of English and/or Italian language abilities (depending on the course)
  • A letter of recommendation
  • A CV or list of extracurricular/volunteering activities
  • A passport copy
  • Any financial documents asked for by the university

Postgraduate students will need to share the same documentation, with some variations. They’ll need to provide original documentation from their previous university qualifications, academic transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a personal statement. International students will also need to have a residence permit for admission to the university. There are different processes for students with EU and non-EU citizenship that can be fully explored on the website.

Scholarships & Funding

The University of Bologna prides itself on world-leading research and a global community on campus. It wants to give great opportunities to talented students from across the world, helping everyone from every background to learn and grow.

Unibo makes a few scholarships and funding awards available to international students. These types of support can range from helping registered refugees with financial aid to covering the tuition fees of students who meet certain levels of academic merit. Students should always do their research and make sure that they are eligible for a university scholarship before applying.

Some examples of stand-out bursaries and scholarships at Bologna are the Unibo Action grants. They provide money and tuition fee waivers to deserving international students who register for first-cycle, second-cycle or single-cycle programmes. Students can apply if they:

  • Have (or are about to receive) a qualification for access to their chosen degree programme issued by a non-Italian academic institution.
  • Are younger than 30 years old.
  • Have taken the SAT and/or TOCL admissions tests (these are required for those wishing to study first and second-cycle programmes, and those applying for second-cycle programmes must also sit the GRE test).

The university also provides scholarships for refugees, as mentioned. People who are escaping war zones or politically unstable situations can apply for single learning activities or Italian courses without having to pay any fees. There’s also the Unibo for Refugees Study Awards of up to EUR 2,500.

These are for high-achieving students who have already won an Er.Go scholarship. Applicants will need to be enrolled in a first, second or single-cycle programme with a residence permit for international protection.

Examples of grants and scholarships for international students from the MAECI (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) include:

  • Grants for master’s degrees
  • Grants for PhD programmes
  • Courses of higher education in arts, music and dance

University Structure

Unibo has over 100 departments and research centres split across four different campuses in Bologna, Forli, Cesena, Rimini and Ravenna. It also has global connections and partnerships including the Tata Innovation Centre in New York, and the Sino-Italian Centre for Sustainability in Shanghai. The 23 faculties that all the university’s departments and centres fall into are:

  • The Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine
  • The Faculty of Applied & Pure Science
  • The Faculty of Business Management
  • The Faculty of Computer Science and IT
  • The Faculty of Creative Arts and Design
  • The Faculty of Engineering
  • The Faculty of Health and Medicine
  • The Faculty of Humanities
  • The Faculty of Law
  • The Faculty of Social Studies and Media

There are 252 undergraduate degree programmes at Unibo, along with 18 MA programmes and 51 PhD programmes. As of 2018, there are five schools which link departments and faculties across campuses, the School of Medicine and the School of Science, as well as the three at certain campuses:

  • The School of Arts, Humanities and Cultural Heritage (Ravenna and Bologna campuses).
  • The School of Economics and Management (Bologna, Forli and Rimini campuses).
  • The School of Engineering (Bologna, Cesena and Ravenna campuses).

Unibo also has lots of excellent research centres, laboratories and institutes that contribute to global growth and education. These research sites are a great resource for all of the students at Unibo and include:

  • The Public Sector Training and Research Centre
  • The Umberto Eco International Centre for Humanistic Studies
  • The Interdepartmental Research Centre for Environmental Sciences

Facilities

As one of the world’s oldest academic institutions, Unibo also wants to make sure that it provides students with great learning facilities and engaging student recreation centres. As well as its famous libraries and laboratories, the university has plenty of sporting facilities and food and drink establishments for those who want to sample some Italian food on campus.

Unibo aims to create an active, exciting atmosphere for students. Each lecture theatre contains modern technology like projectors, microphones and HDMI connections. Capacity in these theatres ranges from 20 to 500 seats, so all class sizes and class types are covered.

Unibo’s University Library System gives students an accessible web portal through which they can access archives, books and resources for their studies, both physical and digital. It also has on-site labs and digital homework labs so students can have access to all the necessary information whether they’re on campus or somewhere else.

Sports lovers can have lots of fun at the CUSB (Bologna University Sports Centre), taking part in exercise classes, competitive and relaxed tournaments and team sports from basketball to athletics, and football. There’s a student activity centre at each of Bologna’s Italian campuses, so a student could learn cheerleading at Rimini one week and fit boxing at Forli the next.

Surrounded by great bars and restaurants in the place where Bolognese sauce was created, students have plenty of choices when it comes to food and drink. There’s also a lot of fun stuff to do in the many lively student life centres once school is out for the day.

Accommodation

The student accommodation options available change across the university’s different campuses and cities. The halls of residence at Unibo are managed by the Regional Authority for the Right to Higher Education (ER.GO) and offered to students who meet certain financial criteria first.

There are two student accommodation options available in Cesena: Palazzo Urbinati, surrounded by the city, and La Torre, a quieter place just a short walk from the campus. Both residences offer single and double rooms with shared kitchens, shared study rooms and free Wi-Fi.

The Il Foro service helps students to find accommodation at affordable rates. International students are encouraged to reach out to student associations and clubs for information and advice about housing across the city, from studio apartments to shared student houses.

Rimini has very social student housing with a fitness centre, study rooms and communal dining rooms. And in the beautiful city of Ravenna near this campus site, Fondazione Flaminia helps students to find accommodation. There are also private and temporary accommodation options available to all students.

Student Support

The University of Bologna wants its students to know their well-being is always the first priority. Unibo’s full student support programme offers healthcare services (there’s a local GP for each Italian campus), mental healthcare services (counselling, psychological student support, and so on) and academic services (skills workshops, peer mentoring, and so on).

Psychological student services are available for free to students between the ages of 20 and 28, and they can be applied for via the Clinical Services Office or the relevant campus information office. Academic student services are often connected to student halls, and there are some more specialist types of student guides who can speak with and support students who have specific disabilities or learning requirements.

International students also benefit from free, targeted student support through the Cross-Cultural Consultation Service. This is designed to help students from different cultures who might be experiencing personal difficulties (like struggling to adapt to life in Italy and new social environments).

Graduate Outcomes

For decades, the University of Bologna has been producing professional, well-prepared students and making employers happy with their new hires. In 2019, Unibo ranked 84th in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings, and companies in and out of Italy are increasingly pleased with the Unibo students they hire.

Lasting partnerships and great job prospects at Unibo are thanks to the many career services the university offers. These employment services range from one-to-one meetings with career guides that help students explore their career options to workshops offering guidance on interviews, CVs and covering letters.

The Career Guidance Service helps final-year students and fresh graduates as they move into working life. The university also offers internships at all levels, including curricular, postgraduate and vocational (for psychologists) internships, and internships abroad.

Unibo has kept up high standards when it comes to the graduate employment rate. In fact, Unibo’s employment services are some of the best in Italy. Lots of graduates from this Italian university find great jobs within 12 months of leaving.

With one of the best reputations in all of Europe for alumni and academic success stories, Bologna is perfect for ambitious students. It’s a historic institution with a great reputation that will help them enter the working world quickly, starting an exciting professional career in the field of their choice.
