Students must be assessed by the Head Teacher prior to being accepted into this course.

Certificates of Competency in Deck or Engineer Officers courses can only be achieved via a definite pathway. Certificates are issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as per requirements laid down in Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) a convention of International Maritime Organization (IMO).

These courses are only part of the prerequisites for the eligibility with AMSA for their final oral assessment prior to issuing of the Certificates of Competency. A student must also have specific and necessary training and sea-service before they are eligible for AMSA final assessment. Students need to apply for Qualifying Sea Service (QSS) approval from AMSA once they receive a letter of offers from TAFE NSW. AMSA requirements and their contact details are obtainable from AMSA website.
