Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant across all industries and the demand for skilled workers is growing rapidly. A recent McKinsey report forecasts that Al will generate $13 trillion in economic activity by 2030, so it’s a good time to gain expertise in this burgeoning and complex field.

In this degree, you’ll learn to design and implement systems and applications in high-tech facilities, such as the newly developed Artificial Intelligence Lab.

The Master of Artificial Intelligence offers two stream options. Project stream students complete an AI postgraduate project and choose two electives in each AI and IT. Students opting to undertake the research stream complete a research methods module, write a minor thesis, and select two AI electives, and one IT elective.

RMIT is ranked among the world’s best by the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA). In 2018, the Australian Research Council rated RMIT ‘above world standard’ for our research in the field of AI and Image Processing. This course is among the most specialised of its kind in the country, with few other degrees focused on AI theory and applications in today’s climate. Curious and motivated students will develop advanced knowledge, placing them ahead of the pack for practical careers or research in AI.

In this rigorous and challenging course, you’ll explore practical components of developing AI apps and platforms and understand the role that ethics and social responsibility play in the future of technology. Students with a proficient background in mathematics will thrive, as this degree requires strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Career

This course provides breadth of high-level computing knowledge as well as depth in artificial intelligence, and the design and implementation of AI systems. In this era of rapid technological change, we will increasingly see AI computer systems take over control and decision-making in diverse areas, and will drive economic growth, public policy and corporate strategy.

This degree will prepare you for a career as an AI professional in this emerging area. You will be able to apply advanced AI knowledge in a range of contexts for professional practice or scholarship, and also as a pathway for further learning.

Job titles for AI professionals are very diverse, and may include: AI engineer, machine learning engineer, business intelligence developer, research scientist and web analyst.

You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in computing, science, engineering or health with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (out of 4.0) or credit average.

OR

You may also be considered if you have an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 and; relevant completed courses in programming and statistics in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or a minimum three years’ of current, relevant work experience or professional practice as a programmer, statistician or equivalent.

To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:

IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.
