Radiological technologists are experts in the use of electromagnetic radiation, such as X-rays, for the diagnosis of injury and disease. Just about every Canadian will benefit from the work and care of a radiological technologist at some point in their lives - whether it's for a sprain, broken ankle or an annual preventative care mammogram.

Radiological technologists use a variety of technologies such as:

Radiography, the commonly used X-ray for the chest, bones, joints, spine and gastrointestinal system

Mammography, for early detection of breast cancer

Bone Mineral Densitometry for detection and follow up of osteoporosis

Angiography, to examine the heart and vascular (veins and arteries) system

Fluoroscopy, real-time, moving images of internal structures

Computed Tomography (CT) scanning used to obtain cross-sectional virtual slices through anatomical structures and to create 3-dimensional reconstructions

Radiological technologists work directly with patients, providing a combination of technological expertise and personal one-on-one care. As a registered radiological technologist, you will:

Assess a patient’s condition and obtain clinical history

Determine technical parameters for production of images

Conduct examinations within a hospital’s diagnostic imaging department, operating room, trauma room and critical care units

Analyze images

Collaborate with the medical team, including radiologists

Provide education and information to the patient and their family

Students must complete high school for admission to the University of New Brunswick. They must complete six specific high school courses, according to their program of choice. UNB takes the overall average of the high school grades achieved in these six courses to calculate the student’s "minimum admission average", which is used to determine admissibility.

Course requirements:

Students must be accepted by a Canadian Medical Association (CMA) or Council on Accreditation for Respiratory Therapy Education (CoARTE) accredited program in Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, or Radiography — or have completed such an accredited program.

Students entering the university who have not yet been admitted into an accredited program should enroll in the Bachelor of Science (BSc) program.

Minimum admission average: 75% (The average marks in Pre-Calculus Math, Chemistry and the best other Science course must be at least 75%; Senior Physics is required)

The University of New Brunswick accepts qualified applicants from all countries. Entry requirements may vary from country to country.

International students require the following English language proficiency minimum scores for direct entry into most academic programs: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 85, CAEL 60, or Pearson Vue Test 59.
