Our performance program blends hands-on experience and experiential education in a collaborative environment. It also serves as a gateway to a professional life in music and as an academic pathway to further specialized research at the DMA/PhD level.

Specifically, the Conducting program is designed to offer conductors advanced experience developing and increasing professional knowledge and practical skills through innovative, forward-thinking learning opportunities to create positive outcomes for students, educators and communities.

Course experiences are targeted towards developing further knowledge and practical skills in conducting techniques, repertoire, rehearsal strategies and approaches, leadership and communication, student learning and engagement through lessons, small and large ensemble conducting.

Outcomes

Students in this program will:

demonstrate advanced conducting techniques and rehearsal strategies through effective communication skills to lead, direct and conduct instrumental and choral ensembles
analyze and interpret musical scores for use in practical musical settings demonstrating a thorough knowledge of core repertoire
examine conducting approaches and musical expression through individual lessons, small and large ensemble conducting and scholarly research
apply advanced musical knowledge, artistry and interpretation gained through scholarly research and practical experiences
use advanced performance diagnostic and analytical listening skills in practical musical settings
reflect and respond to feedback at a high level

شروط القبول

للطلاب الدوليين

Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic
Equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree
Any requirements specific to your program of study
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): We require a minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): We require minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0.
MET (Michigan English Test): A score of 64 on the MET will be accepted as proof of English proficiency.
