Programme Aims and Objectives

To be physically active is an integral and important part of healthy living. With the increasing awareness and need for quality and active lifestyles, the numbers of public and private sport facilities, fitness clubs, and residential clubhouses have increased substantially over the years. There is a high demand for professional management of sports and recreation programmes and facilities as well as delivery of quality physical education in school and community environments. With the continual demand for trained graduates in the field of physical education, sport, and recreation management, the "Physical Education and Recreation Management" (PERM) programme was established in 1992. The overall aim of the PERM is to provide students with sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge, skills, and practical experience (internship) in the discipline of physical education and recreation management. Furthermore, under the ethos of "whole person education" of the University, our students will also receive a strong liberal arts education such that they can embark on a variety of careers.

Specifically, the objectives of the PERM are to enable students to:

  • Acquire knowledge and concepts in physical education, sport sciences, and recreation;
  • Understand the key issues concerning physical education and recreation management in the society;
  • Apply knowledge and skills to effectively select, plan, conduct, and manage programmes in physical education, sport, health fitness, and recreation;
  • Apply a variety of assessment tools for evaluating physical education, sport, health fitness, and recreation programmes;
  • Develop critical thinking skills, independent research skills, communication skills, and team work skills; and
  • Develop positive attitudes towards the adoption of a healthy active lifestyle.

The PERM programme covers sport science theory and knowledge and sport skill practical courses that are essential for a physical education teacher trainee as well as for a sport coach. For those students who opt for the "Teaching Physical Education in Schools" career track, they need to enroll for an additional year of "Teacher Certificate" programme. By fulfilling the teacher training requirement, graduates can then be eligible to apply for the "Registered Physical Education Teacher" status.

Applicants should have US High School Graduation Diploma; and successful completion of one year's study in a full-time AD programme at a recognised US university/ community college, provided that the duration of the programme should be at least two years in full-time mode. Students following Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) in community colleges must hold: US High School Graduation Diploma; and successful completion of IGETC with Grade C or above in each of the subjects. English Language Requirements : TOEFL- Internet-based test (iBT) - Score: 79; or Paper-based test (PBT) - Score: 550; IELTS Academic: Overall Band: 6.0. Grade C or above in GCE O-Level/ GCSE/ IGCSE English; or Grade E or above in GCE AS Level or AL Level English; Grade E or above in HKALE Use of English (AS Use of English); IB - Grade 4 in: IB English A (Higher or Standard Level); or IB English B (Higher Level); or IB English Literature and Performance (Standard Level) or Grade 5 in: IB English B (Standard Level).

Applicants who apply for admission with overseas qualifications are expected to have received 12-year pre-university education with appropriate school-leaving qualifications. Students from other countries should have qualifications equivalent to Hong Kong.

The following public examination results are recognised as meeting the English Language requirements stipulated by the University:

  • TOEFL: Internet-based test (iBT) - Score: 79; or Paper-based test (PBT) - Score: 550
  • IELTS Academic: Overall Band 6.0
  • IGCSE First Language English: Grade C/ Grade 4
  • IGCSE English as a Second Language: Grade B/ Grade 5
  • IB: Grade 4 in: IB English A (Higher or Standard Level); or IB English B (Higher Level); or IB English Literature and Performance (Standard Level) OR Grade 5 in: IB English B (Standard Level)
