Programme Aims

The BSocSc(GCS) programme aims to:

  1. enable students to acquire applied methods and analytical skills to critically examine issues arising from the regional cooperation and competition in a globalised world;
  2. provide an overview of social sciences and the disciplines that make up of the social sciences;
  3. provide students with knowledge of the dynamics of social transitions in Greater China and a comprehensive understanding of regional developments from the comparative and sociological perspectives;
  4. enhance students' understanding of the complex interplay of global, regional, national, and local factors that affect social transitions in Greater China with relation to development, governance, and policy across the region;
  5. provide students with the academic and professional foundation to become professionals in government/non-government organisations, corporations; and local/national/international education-related associations and organisations, and
  6. provide a strong foundation for career advancement and future postgraduate studies.

Major Studies

The Greater China Studies Major comprises the following:

  • Foundation Courses: Theoretical Framework for Social Sciences and Greater China Studies
    • e.g. Institutions and Development in the Greater China Region
  • Comparative Development in Greater China
    • e.g. Economic Growth and Sustainability in Greater China
  • Comparative Policy and Governance
    • e.g. Comparative Social Policy in Asia
  • Experiential Learning in Greater China
    • Comparative Field Visit
    • Internship
    • Honours Project

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

The programme is a passport to a wide range of employment opportunities including positions such as educational research, working as officers in the HKSAR Government, district council, educational publication and service, educational officers in NGOs and business companies, administrators in arts and culture, media producers and journalists. The programme can be a first step along a professional career advancement in Greater China. There is a growing community demand for professionals with expertise in the interdisciplinary areas of education, social sciences, arts and culture, and Greater China studies.

This programme will prepare graduates to become capable personnel with the capacity to enter a wide range of careers in the public and private sectors in which a solid foundation in social sciences and a comprehensive and sophisticated understanding of Greater China is essential to success. Students may choose to pursue a teaching career by completing an additional year of professional teacher training (e.g., the PGDE). Qualified teachers who can teach Greater China-related subjects in primary and secondary schools are in great demand in Hong Kong.

The following is a list of acceptable tests and the score required:

  • TOEFL - Paper-based: 550; or Internet-based: 80
  • IELTS Academic - Overall Band: 6
  • GCE System: Grade E or above in GCE AS-level or A-level English; or Grade C or above in IGCSE / GCE O-level English; or Grade C or above in GCSE English or English Literature
  • IB - Grade 4 in the Higher Level English Language (B Syllabus); or Grade 5 in the Standard Level English Language (B Syllabus); or Grade 4 in the Higher or Standard Level English Language (A1 or A2 Syllabus); or Grade 4 in the Higher or Standard Level English A: Language and Literature; or Grade 4 in the Higher or Standard Level English A: Literature; or Grade 4 in the Standard Level English-Literature and Performance; or Grade 4 in the Standard Level English-Text and Performance
  • SAT - A sub-score of 8 in Essay Writing in old SAT; or 590 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing in new SAT
  • Others - Other English language qualifications deemed acceptable by the University.
