The Human Rights LLM pathway is unique in its passionate engagement with the highly contested and at best scandalous nature of human rights law and discourse.

Human rights are at the interface of law, politics, sociology, philosophy, anthropology - as well as art, film and literature.

Our students include current and future legal practitioners, but also students from other fields; and they come from all over the world.

A compelling aspect of a number of our modules is that they are taught with leading NGOs and grassroots activists, opening up a wealth of possibilities working in civil society, as well as in legal practice, government, international and community organisations

CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY

Graduates can pursue career paths in the legal profession, government, the private sector, and research or journalism. Possible professions include:

solicitor

journalist

chartered legal executive

licensed conveyancer

human resources officer

patent attorney.

For entry onto a Master’s Degree, most US students would need to have completed a Bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.2 GPA (for courses requiring a 2:1); students from highly ranked institutions may also be considered with a GPA of 3.0/4.0. For courses requiring a 2:2, a GPA of 2.8 is required; The terms below are used to recognise students with particularly high GPAs: Cumulative GPA 3.9 (alternative name: Summa cum laude); Cumulative GPA 3.7 (alternative name: Magna cum laude); Cumulative GPA: 3.5 (alternative name: Cum laude). Applications are considered on an individual basis and students may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower level degree if they have work experience relevant to the degree applied for.

A second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in law, the humanities or social sciences; other honours degrees will be considered. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, the requirement for this course is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. TOEFL: Standard requirement: 79 (reading: 18, writing: 23, listening: 19, speaking: 19).
