ماذا سوف أتعلم؟

The Civil Engineering BS curriculum provides training in the basic sciences, engineering science, general education and design experience. Basic science includes mathematics, chemistry and physics. Engineering science includes statics, dynamics, fluid dynamics, mechanics of solids, soil mechanics, construction materials, surveying, thermodynamics and electrical systems. The broad category of general education includes courses in history, political science, humanities and communication. Design experience entails five subdisciplines of civil engineering: structural, environmental, water resources, geotechnical and transportation engineering.

Lecture and laboratory classes train the student in theory and practical applications. The overall objective is to provide design experience which involves open ended problems that are subject to various constraints. The student learns to work on teams, to examine options and make informed decisions regarding the design of a civil engineering system (building, bridge, pipeline, airport, water treatment plant, etc.). The curriculum concludes with a semester−long design project of a typical civil engineering project. The project brings all the knowledge gained from the curriculum to focus on the design. Students practice planning, scheduling, data collection, report writing, oral and graphical (CAD) communication in a simulated design office setting.

Program Educational Objectives

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering has adopted a straightforward set of educational objectives for the Civil Engineering BS graduates. The definition of "objective" in this context means our expectations for our graduates' accomplishments several years after completing the Civil Engineering BS program.

The Program Educational Objectives define future roles for which we are preparing our graduates.

The Program Educational Objectives for the Civil Engineering BS program are as follows:

Graduates will meet the expectations of employers of civil engineers.
Graduates will continue their professional development through graduate study if qualified and continuing education.

Student Outcomes

The Student Outcomes define the knowledge and skills that will be mastered by our graduates.

General Engineering Program Outcomes

To enable the Civil Engineering students to accomplish the educational objectives, the curriculum is designed to assure that students at the time of graduation, would be able to

Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering.
Design and conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data.
Design a system, component or process to meet the constituencies needs within realistic constraints.
Function on multidisciplinary teams.
Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
Understand professional and ethical responsibility.
Communicate effectively.
Understand the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal context.
Engage in life-long learning.
Possess knowledge of contemporary issues.
Use techniques, skills and modern engineering tools.

Civil Engineering Program Specific Criteria

By the time of graduation, Civil Engineering students can

Apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, calculus-based physics, chemistry, and at least one additional area of basic science.
Apply probability and statistics to address uncertainty; analyze and solve problems in at least four technical areas appropriate to civil engineering.
Conduct experiments in at least two technical areas of civil engineering and analyze and interpret the resulting data.
Design a system, component, or process in at least two civil engineering contexts; include principles of sustainability in design.
