The Department of History offers the only graduate program in History in the state of South Dakota. Students can focus on a variety of areas in American and European History. Library holdings for graduate research are especially strong in regional, Native American, and 20th-Century United States history.
HIST 780 - HISTORIOGRAPHY 3 cr hrs
HIST 782 - RESEARCH SEMINAR IN HISTORY 3 cr hrs
HIST 798 - THESIS 1 to 6 cr hrs (6 credit hours required)
Four HIST seminar courses (7xx) 12 credit hours
Departmental or non-departmental electives 6 credit hours
Note: Plan A students must take an oral examination. Graduate transfer credits are limited to six hours and must receive approval from the Department.

Students with Baccalaureate degree must be from an institution with full regional accreditation for that degree. A minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 on conferred degree and/or graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, based on a 4.0 scale, on all graduate coursework is required for full admission.
English Language Requirements:
A minimum score of 79 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT) or 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT), a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or a minimum PTE score of 53 is required for graduate admission.
