This course is available to students who have already completed their studies in this study area. Honours can be undertaken in any area of science, and involves designing a research program in your chosen area of interest in consultation with one or more supervisors. Your research program may include components in more than one area of science (eg. mathematics and biology) and depending on the nature of your project you may also have to undertake some courses in experimental design or complete technical training to use a particular piece of equipment.The honours course in the University of Sydney School of Chemistry gives you the opportunity to get involved in a research program in an area that is of interest to you. It provides training in research techniques and experience using modern research instrumentation, and gives you access to newly renovated laboratories throughout the school. The honours course adds a new dimension to the skills that you acquired during your undergraduate years and enhances your immediate employment prospects and, more significantly, your future career potential.In the honours year, you will have the opportunity to undertake a research project under the supervision of a member of staff and complete a thesis based on the research. You will also complete advanced lecture coursework, normally given by leaders in their field from overseas or Australia, and attend research seminars. Unit of study requirements for Honours in the area of Chemistry: completion of 36 credit points of project work and 12 credit points of coursework.
