This qualification outlines the abilities and understanding necessary for an advanced tradesperson in the metalworking, engineering, manufacturing, and related fields. The competencies linked to this certification are designed to be relevant to a broad spectrum of engineering tasks in various areas such as refrigeration and air conditioning, casting and molding, computer numerical control (CNC) programming, fluid power, heavy fabrication, instrumentation, maintenance, plant mechanics, marine electronics, mechatronics, patternmaking, robotics, toolmaking, welding, watch and clock repair, and other related post-trade work.This qualification imparts the necessary competencies and knowledge to an individual, enabling them to apply quality control methods, exhibit effective interpersonal and communication skills, follow complex instructions and procedures, utilize discretion within their realm of responsibility, work independently or as part of a team under limited supervision, ensure the quality of their own work, offer trade guidance and support as a member of a work team, carry out additional non-trade duties that are ancillary or complementary to primary duties, inspect products and materials to ensure compliance with established operational standards, operate lifting equipment as required for their work, and assist in training activities in collaboration with supervisors and trainers.Individuals can directly pursue this certification without any prerequisite qualifications. However, it is expected that the learner is either an apprentice enrolled in an Australian Apprenticeship scheme or an existing tradesperson with access to structured on-the-job and off-the-job training. This qualification is not intended as a pre-employment or pre-apprenticeship program. Its primary objective is to encompass the necessary competencies and knowledge required for individuals employed as Engineering/Manufacturing Tradesperson – Special Class Level II, as defined in the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award.Currently, there are no mandatory legislative, licensing, or certification requisites for this certification as of its publication. Nevertheless, in certain jurisdictions, individual units within this qualification may necessitate obtaining a license. Pertinent information regarding licensing is provided in the relevant competency units.

The following are the Admission requirements of ISMT:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of course commencement.
  • Prospective students may be required to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) and/or a pre-enrolment interview.
  • Must have completed Australian Year 11 or equivalent level of schooling or a Certificate III or higher qualification with an Australian institution.
  • Must have basic digital literacy, including the ability to confidently use the internet and common software applications for learning purposes, completing assignments, and engaging with course content.
  • Must be able to participate in training within a simulated workplace environment, including performing manual handling tasks.
