By closely aligning with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this industry-integrated degree gives students the experience, tools and connections to help shape and lead meaningful transformation.

The Master of International Development Practice focuses on understanding and tackling the political, economic, cultural and ecological issues that can lead to extreme poverty, poor health, fragile governance, inequality and environmental vulnerability.

Delivered by specialists and industry experts, the course combines a multi-disciplinary approach to the theory and practice of sustainable development, and offers opportunities to learn through international field trips and internships. You'll graduate equipped to respond to crises as they unfold.

Adapt the course to suit your needs

Choose from six streams relating to UN Sustainable Development Goals - Democracy, justice and governance; Crisis, change management and leadership; Gender, peace and security; Global migration; Sustainable resource management; or Sustainable economies - or choose from a wide range of enrichment units and complementary electives.

Develop an advanced knowledge of international development fundamentals, addressing questions ranging from the causes of inequality and disparity, evolving aid and development thought and practice, to the impact of politics, economics, culture, history and natural resources human development.

Gain practical industry experience and expand your professional portfolio via a choice of an industry internship; practice-based research project work; or an advanced simulation project.

Build essential career competencies via our Professional Enhancement Program (PEP) and choose from a suite of unique modules taught by academic and industry experts.

Choose an optional Research Pathway* and pave the way towards further graduate research (PhD) study (*Eligible high achieving students may apply to undertake a research thesis.)

You'll combine academic insight and academic and practitioner mentoring with a high level of industry integration to gain practical experience and give yourself a competitive advantage in the workforce. Guided by world-class, industry-leading teaching staff, you'll use an appreciation of best practice approaches within the field to identify complex development challenges across diverse cultural and geo-political contexts. Our Advisory Board members are drawn from public and private sectors and contribute their expertise to our course design.

Our students have completed local and international internships at Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, the Red Cross, WhyDev, Global Citizen, the Humanitarian Advisory Group and Monash University's own student-run social enterprise SEED. Further develop your professional networks via the MIDPA (Monash International Development Practice Association) and via our partnership with the Global Association of the Masters in Development Practice .

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences with at least credit (60%) average, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Or

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) and an Australian graduate certificate (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences with at least a 50 percent average in both qualifications, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Entry level 3: 48 points to complete Duration: 1 years full-time, 2 years part-time

An Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences with at least credit (60%) average, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

IELTS (Academic): 6.5 Overall score, with minimum band scores: Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 6.0

Pearson Test of English (Academic): 58 Overall score, with minimum scores: Listening 50, Reading 50, Speaking 50 and Writing 50

TOEFL Internet-based test: 79 Overall score, with minimum scores: Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18 and Writing 21

Paper-based TOEFL 550 Test of written English: 4.5
