Microbiology programs are designed to give students a good understanding of microorganisms, including diversity, ecology, physiology, molecular genetics, current approaches in bacterial genomicsproteomics, and microbial associations with animal hosts and the environments. Such knowledge will provide the basis for further work with microbes in medicine, agricultural industries including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and the environment surveillance and bioremediation.In this major, you will study how micro-organisms interact with and impact the world around us, and explore the evolving diversity of bacteria, viruses, archaea, and fungi. Applications of microbiology range from antibiotic development and resistance to the relevance of the gut micro-flora in diseases, to yeast production for beverage and food development.The Microbiology co-op is a five-year program, which includes four work terms, and helps to provide invaluable experience in hands-on scientific settings, providing skills and experience to boost your resume and fast-track your career.
