The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is granted only upon evidence of general proficiency and of distinctive attainment in a special field. In particular, a recognized ability for independent investigation must be demonstrated by the candidate in a thesis which embodies original research or creative scholarship and is presented with a high degree of literary skill. It is a research degree and is never conferred solely as a result of coursework study.An essential feature of Ph.D. study is the candidate's demonstration of competence to complete a research project and present the findings. The thesis must constitute a distinct contribution to knowledge in the major field of study and the material must be of sufficient merit to be, in the judgment of the examiners, acceptable for publication. Students are required to have confirmed an advisor at the time of application to the Ph.D. program. Research opportunities are available in various aspects of environmental sciences and studies, as well as, physical and human geography. The Ph.D. option consists of coursework and a substantial research component.Expected Duration - 4 years.
