The MA in Linguistics program is strongly research-oriented. Students will pursue original research in a variety of linguistic subdisciplines, including core theoretical areas (e.g., phonology, morphology and syntax) and combined areas (e.g., historical linguistics, sociolinguistics and cognitive linguistics).The Department of Linguistics is pleased to offer both Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philoshophy (PhD) degrees in Theoretical Linguistics. Our students pursue original research in a variety of linguistic subdisciplines, including core theoretical areas (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax) and combined areas (e.g. historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics). The department continues to encourage collection of primary data through fieldwork with native speakers of understudied and endangered languages, and increasingly our students are finding fruitful projects based on experimental and corpus data. All programs include coursework, generals papers (at the PhD level), the development of a thesis proposal, and the research, writing and defense of a thesis.The M.A. program includes coursework, the development of a thesis proposal, and the research, writing and defense of a thesis.Expected Duration - 2 years.
