In this degree you’ll gain comprehensive knowledge of New Zealand’s school curriculum and the skills required to teach students in a range of socially diverse settings, while adhering to the policies and procedures of the education system.

This degree is practice-based – you’ll find yourself working alongside experienced teachers in local primary and intermediate schools for two days a week as part of the programme. For the other three days you’ll be on campus developing professional knowledge associated with subjects such as language and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, art, technology, health and physical education.

Outline

The Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) offers you the opportunity to gain a professional qualification as a Primary Teacher, Years 0 – 8 (ages 5 – 13).

This is a practice-based teacher education programme, which provides a balance between theory, research and practice. Learning is supported through a combination of face-to-face, online and self-directed activity, while the practice-based component enables you to apply your campus learning to practice in classrooms. This qualification prepares you for further post-graduate study should you choose to do so.

You will attend EIT three days a week and a designated primary school two days a week.

An undergraduate degree in a creative practice with a B average or better; or, Where the applicant does not meet the entry criteria above, the applicant may be provisionally admitted on the basis of an evaluation of a portfolio of work. Such provisionally accepted students will be expected to pass their first course in the programme in order to progress. English Language Requirements: IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0; TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 79 (with a writing score of 21); OET - Minimum of Grade C+ or 300 in all subtests; PTE (Academic) score of 58 with no band score lower than 50; NZCEL Level 5 Academic.

  • Has attained a University Entrance (UE) qualification and is over the age of 18 years at the beginning of the programme’s academic year
  • In support of their application, applicants must supply in a CV a detailed account of their educational background, evidence of experience with primary school aged children, and an openness to learning; this must be supported by references or attestations from persons who have observed the applicant working with primary aged children and can comment on their potential for tertiary study, and suitability for teaching.
  • Be free from criminal convictions which would preclude them from working with children.
  • Provide evidence of the personal and professional qualities appropriate for undertaking a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) by furnishing two references from persons who are not related to the applicant, using prescribed Referee Forms
  • Submit a Police Clearance Certificate

English Language Requirements

Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This must be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 7.0 (academic) in all bands. A skype interview and references will also be required.
