Academic staff in the Department of Mathematics carry out pioneering research which is making an impressive impact on the world stage. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) the department was ranked second in the UK for research impact.The department has 20 staff performing research in a number of areas of pure, applied and applicable mathematics, probability and statistics, and information security.The main research interests in the department can be grouped into the following areasAlgebraDiscrete Mathematics and its ApplicationsNumber TheoryQuantum DynamicsStatistics and Probability.From time to time, we make changes to our courses to improve the student and learning experience. The minimum entry requirement for an MPhil or an MPhil leading to a PhD degree is the equivalent of a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree in an appropriate subject, although in many cases a Masters (or MSci) level qualification will also be expected. Candidates must also be demonstrably proficient in English.
