MA Degree ProgramProgram objectives are to equip students with knowledge in a specific field of art and visual culture to foster critical analysis of the major theories and documents of art history as a practical tool for individual research to provide field opportunities through museum internships or archaeological excavations and to develop strategies for the presentation of research in a clear and persuasive manner.Program RequirementsA total of 30 semester hours for the concentration in Egyptian Art and Archaeology.6 semester hours required fromARTH 6123 - Greek Art Credit Hours: (3)ARTH 7130 - Art Hist Methods & Prac Credit Hours: (3)12 hours required from Egyptian Art and Archaeology:3 semester hours selected from:ARTH 6111 - Art/Arch Egypt Credit Hours: (3)ARTH 6112 - Egypt Art-Old Kingdom Credit Hours: (3)ARTH 6113 - Egypt Art-New Kingdom Credit Hours: (3)9 semester hours required from:ARTH 7115 - Middle Egyptian I Credit Hours: (3)ARTH 7116 - Middle Egyptian II Credit Hours: (3)ARTH 7117 - Middle Egyptian Lit Credit Hours: (3)Students selecting the thesis option (see item 3, below) will complete 9 additional semester hours in the major area (ARTH) outside the required courses (ARTH 6123 and ARTH 7130) AND complete ARTH 7996 - Thesis. Of the electives, 6 semester hours may come from outside the department (ARTH). Students selecting the comprehensive examination option (see item 3, below) will complete 12 additional semester hours in the major area (ARTH) outside the required courses (ARTH 6123 and ARTH 7130). Of these, 6 semester hours may come from outside the department (ARTH).Note:Students should consult with their academic advisor as to the required and recommended courses appropriate to their area of concentration.

Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelors degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.

GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.

English proficiency test scores accepted by the University:

  • Duolingo English Test-110 or higher on the overall score.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) 550 or higher on the paper version, 80 or higher on the internet-based test
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)- 6.5 or higher
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) - 59 or higher
