The Child Development program explores the social/emotional, cognitive/language, and physical/motor growth and development of children from conception through adolescence. Students take child development courses to obtain a certificate or permit, to earn an associate degree, to prepare for university transfer, or for professional enrichment. Career options include a variety of professions that serve children and their families, such as infant/toddler care, preschool teaching (including Head Start), elementary and secondary education, early childhood special education, program administration, school counseling, child psychology, child advocacy, social work, and community services. Students may earn one of the above-named associate degrees by completing a certificate of achievement and the general education courses required for MiraCosta College's Associate in Arts degree (see Associate Degrees).
