Instrumental music education majors are required to complete class instrument courses as listed below. A student who principally performs on a woodwind, brass, percussion, or string instrument normally will replace one class in the category of his or her principal instrument with guitar class (by advisement). Academic electives will include courses in the natural and behavioral sciences and the humanities.

Piano principals may be accepted into this degree program provided they possess sufficient experience and/or aptitude for learning band and orchestral instruments. To graduate, piano principals must complete, at a minimum, Piano Level VIII. Requirements for each level appear at the end of the Undergraduate Programs section of the Catalog Announcements.
