The Linguistics major focuses on the "how and why" of all languages. It does not focus on a single language. The major is a scientific study of the origins of words, the spreading of languages and the human capacity for language. Available courses include:Phonetics and PhonologyFirst Language AcquisitionAmerican English DialectsLanguage in SocietyCross-Cultural LinguisticsStudents majoring in Linguistics often use their degrees in teaching, publishing, software development, translation or cross-cultural environments while others pursue graduate studies in a variety of fields.Students may also pursue a linguistics minor, which requires students to complete 18 hours of upper-level courses in the English department. Students can major in English or Professional Writing and pursue this minor. However, they may not major in Linguistics with a minor in Linguistics.
