The Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice at UMass Lowell is an interdisciplinary, research-focused program designed to equip you with advanced research, analytical and policy skills to address critical issues in crime, justice and security. UMass Lowell's School of Criminology and Justice Studies is recognized for its excellence in scholarship and commitment to applying knowledge to real-world social problems. Our faculty are leaders in conducting large-scale national and international research projects and work collaboratively with communities and agencies to assist with strategic problem-solving, crime analysis, evaluation research and policy analysis. UMass Lowell strives to provide financial support for all admitted Ph.D. students. This includes funding through Teaching Assistantships (TA), Research Assistantships (RA) and summer research support. Assistantships are contingent upon availability and may be subject to change.

  • A statement of purpose indicating why you wish to pursue a doctoral degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology
  • Three letters of recommendation providing academic references from individuals familiar with your educational performance
  • A writing sample such as a theoretical paper, research paper, or literature review
  • Official transcripts
  • Official test scores
    • GRE required
    • GRE Waiver not available
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field with a minimum 3.750 GPA from an accredited institution
  • Alternatively a Master's degree in Criminal Justice or related field with a minimum 3.660 GPA from an accredited institution
  • Applicants should have a master's degree in criminal justice or a related field
  • An interview may be requested by the Graduate Admissions Committee
  • Verbal and Quantitative scores on the Graduate Record Examination [i.e., generally, the 40th percentile on each GRE component: Quantitative, Verbal and Writing]
