What’s it like moving away from home for the first time?

BSc in Geoenvironmental Hazards

At first it's something to get use to it is obviously a big change however nearly everyone is in the same boat as you which I think everyone forgets. You kind of think you're in this on your own but you're not! You can't expect to settle straight away some people may, but others can take longer, I remember it took me around a month or so to fully settle. However, going to the different fresher’s events, meeting new people and having those assignments that take up time, and do make you settle and just get use to your new life. I found it great just talking to your flat mates on how your feeling, how they are doing, how you can support each other can also be a great way of showing you’re not alone in this. Just remember you can still call your parents and have a chat and if you aren’t too far from home maybe go see them however, I wouldn’t recommend this in the first week of you being there as I find this can prevent you from settling. The first month or so is the hardest as it is getting use to something brand new. But you make new routines and having good flat mates and course mates can make a big difference on how you feel. If you friends from back home have also moved away it could be great for you to chat with them and see how they are doing and maybe schedule a meet up in a couple of weeks as something to look forward to. If you are struggling, you could get in contact with the student support team and they could sign post you to the best resources and people available. Campus connectors also do lots of different events that you could get involved with to take your mind off having moved away and maybe help you make new connections with people.

Moving away from home can be quite scary and daunting the first time, especially if you’re a home bird like me. Making your room as homely as possible can definitely help, so things like pictures of family and friends, plenty of blankets and pillows for comfort, (battery powered) fairy light for your walls and also calling home when you need that little pick me up. Don’t be afraid to admit that you’re missing home because no doubt a lot of people are feeling the same 💗💗

Like all new things, moving away from home for the first time can be really scary at first. However, your home will always be there for you and most people are only a quick call away if you get a bit homesick. Plus, once you start university life it can tend to feel like your brand new home and, best of all, you get all the independence to decide how you run it yourself! Therefore, I found moving away from one one of the best things I ever did as I now get to make all my own decisions and have met loads of new people I wouldn't have known had I not decided to come to Edge Hill.

What advice would you give a mature student looking to study a degree?

1 Answer

Oct 24, 2022

BSc (Hons) in Business and Management

I would say relax, be organised, and get involved in as much as you can. Don’t be worried about not going down the traditional entry route; you deserve to be on your course, and make sure you get to know your peers. They’ll value your experience. I was very worried about being the oldest on my cohort but I have such lovely fellow students to work with now after getting to know them and our different experiences make for really valuable critical conversations. A planner/diary/calendar is a must so you can easily identify dead time, such as when commuting you can do some reading or listen to podcasts, or you will easily be able to see where your free time is to commit to your studies without distraction. Learning services run the ‘Returning to Learning’ Uniskills sessions where you can get to know other mature students or anyone with a gap in education. I would also suggest get involved in societies or volunteering in roles in your faculty. The extracurricular activities I have completed are where I have really felt part of the wonderful Edge Hill Community. Getting onto campus early or staying after classes if possible will allow you to work whilst in ‘study’ mode without distraction. I would also suggest accessing the study skills books in the library, particularly those aimed at mature students, to build knowledge and skills on coping with academia and academic writing. Most of all I would say enjoy the experience, don’t get hung up on the number on your assessment, and ask yourself what have you learnt along the way so you can see value in your degree. It goes by so fast and it is easy to get caught up in the cycle of assessments, so take time for reflecting on the journey to see how much you’ve achieved.

1. Read the monthly newsletters (which are emailed to your student email) to find out about any welcoming activities which can help you meet other students also settling in to university life. 2. Have a look over your course timetable, if available, and organise a routine for yourself based on when your lectures are etc. so you know what days you have free! This can help to keep on top of everything throughout the year. 3. If you feel uncertain about anything or homesick etc. please do not hesitate to reach out to the Student Support team - feeling lost or uncertain during the first few weeks of University is completely normal! My top three tips for the first few weeks at university would be: - To get involved as much as possible, put yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things. - Look after yourself and be proud of how much you have achieved. Coming to university is something to be proud of. Make sure you are making time for yourself and know you’re doing amazing. - Finally, make sure you go to all your lectures in the first few weeks. This is where you will get all the baseline information and you will be told about the way in which the module is taught. It is so much easier to understand and carry on attending lectures if you attended the first couple of weeks :) It also builds good habits for the future. Good luck! < 3

My top 3 tips are: Go to some society taster sessions to see what you think and whether you would like to join. Don’t get too stressed about work straight away, it will take time to get used to lectures and assignments so be kind to yourself. Try to make the most of events that are on and services that the uni provide. Especially the uni skills which are little workshops that are run by the library. They provide support with things such as academic writing, finding an academic texts and referencing etc.

Ask for help if needed it’s all new to you and you won’t understand everything. The lecturers are so nice and welcoming and will help you in anyway they can. If living in halls my other tip would be to personalise your room as this is your home and you want to feel comfortable and at ease. The best way to do that is to decorate with familiar things from home like photos. Remember that everyone is in the same boat so if your living in halls and it’s your first time away from home it will most likely will be the same for everyone and remember that for the first few weeks while you settle. An extra tip would be to take advantage of all the opportunities in the first few weeks and beyond, there is so much to get yourself stuck in to so just enjoy it!

What was Ramadan like on campus?

1 Answer

Jul 27, 2023

MA in Education Leadership

Ramadan is a month of fasting and therefore being away from home whilst experiencing the month of Ramadan can be really hard for some people. However at Edge Hill University, the staff/ lecturers and students are all so understanding and supportive and allow those fasting to take it easy and have regular breaks from work and tasks. Also, the Islamic society host an iftaar evening, which is a lovely gesture as it brings a feel of home to the students, who live on campus with yummy food served along with a speech of reminding all the virtues of fasting and the rewards that come from it! Ramadan on campus is also not that hard if you have friends, who are also fasting as it is an enjoyable way to cook together and open the fasts with friends who become family 🍛🌙

Where do you live after first year?

After first year of living on campus (If you decide to stay in the beautiful campus environment) then for your other years at university it is important to decide where you want to live. There are many off campus student accommodations in Ormskirk and surrounding areas accessible for you to explore and stay, local to Edge Hill. However, as a student who has always loved living in the university campus environment, there are many more options you can consider. There are a varied range of different accommodations available on campus and as of for 3rd years I would definitely recommend staying in Woodland court as this is accommodation only for students in their final year of university and is really is a luxury place for students to stay in! 🏘️

After first year you can either live on campus again space permitting or off campus in private accommodation. For my second year I lived on campus again in Founders however in my final year I am now living off campus. There are many pros and cons to living on campus or off one of which being the cost on campus can be much cheaper than in private accommodation. Your on campus which means you are much closer to everything. However, being off campus means you are closer to all the shops which is especially convenient when you have run out of something. Living off campus I find gives you even more independence and can mean you can live with friends you have made in first or second year.

What is your weekly food shopping budget and where do you like to do your shopping?

3 Answers

BA (Hons) in History and Politics

My weekly food shop budget is £20-£30 but a couple of months ago it was more like £10-£20 because I was really strapped for cash. I prefer to do my shopping at Morrisons as I personally think the food quality is better, but I will still shop at Aldi, especially if they have a cheaper version of food that Morrisons have. For example, smoked salmon or pastrami. In Aldi it’s also much easier to find essentials that you need.

My weekly budget for groceries is around £20 and sometimes less or more depending on the store as well. If I get all what I needed from Aldi, then it comes under my budget and if I have to buy it from different stores such as Morrisons, then it could be little more, so it all depends on the store and products we buy. Monthly grocery shopping is manageable around £60 per month as well if done well for a student.

🌺I mostly do major shopping on a monthly basis which is when I stock up on most everything and that costs me about 20-40 pounds depending on what I’m getting. However, I do sometimes get things like cheese and bread every other week/day. So, I’m a month, I’ll say I spend 30-50 pounds which puts me at roughly 10 pounds a week or so. Also, I mostly shop at ALDI but I sometimes go to Morrisons too for things I can’t get at ALDI.

1. Try and make the most of each experience! There are so many events in Welcome Week, some free and some paid, and that isn't including the numerous societies that will be offering meetings filled with activities. It is a great time to meet new people and find something you enjoy while you have some free-time. If you're struggling to find a society, the Welcome fair (usually taking place on the first Wednesday) can be a fantastic way to check out societies and meet people. As a reminder, there are plenty of events throughout the year, so I wouldn't be disheartened if you missed any events or didn't feel comfortable trying new things straight away. 2. Try and connect with flatmates, coursemates, and anyone you meet. Try exploring the campus, and trying the numerous activities together. You could cook a flat meal, or check out one of the many cafes or restaurants in Ormskirk😊 3. Familiarise yourself with campus. Find your course building, but also the Launderette, Students' Union, where you'll collect post and parcels, the gym, the library, and anything else of note. Reach out to staff and older students around campus if you have any questions, and have a fantastic first week at Edge Hill!😊

Here are my top three tips for settling in at uni: - Bring your home comforts to uni with you. Whether that’s a teddy bear that you love and sleep with at home, a coffee machine, whatever it is don’t feel embarrassed, just bring it! I found this really helped me to settle in having these comfort items with me as well as photos of my family and friends from back home and a nice comfortable duvet🥰 Having these items as well as making your room your own will help you feel so much more at home and settled in. Kind of a separate point but you could also consider making your comfort meal that you would normally have at home. - Give yourself time to adjust. Don’t feel like you have to rush yourself into going out all the time and always being happy. It’s so okay to be home sick and just mentally giving yourself that time and space to adjust to university life I think it so important. - Be honest with your flatmates and friends about how you are feeling and how you are doing. Check in on others and they will do the same for you and you will hopefully create a really nice and supportive group of people you feel settled and comfortable around. Please know that you are not on your own and you will find your feet! 💗

A hidden gem, and one of the best places to eat in Ormskirk is actually a butcher's shop here. My Welsh friend took me my complete surprise leading me into the shop for lunch one day, when he orders us 2 salt and pepper chicken barms. The barm is basically a sandwich, and contains amazingly spiced, hot chicken, which is cooled down by a generously buttered bun and garlic mayo. All barms are takeout, and since finding that place, to me, I feel like the chicken barm is almost like the English equivolent of a New York slice: something you eat on the go, with an equal sense of pride and delight. We started with a welcome talk which helped me to feel at ease and I was assured that the interview was nothing to be afraid of and just to give an indication about myself. My interview was online and I was given a time, link to join and clear, specific materials to prepare in plenty of time so I felt very prepared for it. I found my interview experience very positive! I had some personal difficulties on the day of my interview, and before the interviews began, the staff asked us if there was anyone struggling who would benefit from speaking to them one-to-one. I explained my situation to a member of staff and they were very sympathetic and re-assured me in what I was expecting to be a stressful experience. Despite the difficulties I was facing that week, I found that the experience was enjoyable. The applicants I met and spoken to were really nice, and so we're the interviewers. In the interview stations, I felt at ease and the conversations still felt formal, yet I was relaxed. I remember saying something off-topic but the interviewer re-phrased the question to put me back on-topic. I didn't feel embarrassed or worried that I had 'ruined' my chance, as the staff were so supportive throughout the entire experience😊 The staff running the interviews were mindful that this can be a stressful experience, and their understanding went a long way in helping me on what was already a difficult way. The questions were aimed at getting insight into why I wanted to do my course, what triggered me to apply at the time, what I hoped to achieve during my degree and how the degree would help me achieve my career aspirations. I was also given lots of time to ask questions (and I had a few) but I was not made to rush and questions were well answered. I was told what the next steps would be and how soon I would hear. I was put at ease throughout the interview.

One thing that really surprised me about Edge Hill University was the amount of tremendous support students can receive from the different organised departments within the university and how easily students can access these services, which are available to them. For example, the university is very inclusive and supportive to all students. Personally, being a part of the inclusion team myself, I have been in awe of the amazing work and commitment that is put in to helping every student, catering towards and meeting the needs of all individuals. The university encourages diversity, and is a multicultural community as there are many opportunities available to every student, therefore preventing discrimination against anyone regardless of their disabilities or needs. Also, Edge Hill University has a student wellbeing department where those students, who are having difficulty with their mental health and other issues related to their education or wellbeing are supported by the team. A lot of students tend to experience stress and anxiety during their studies and here at this uni. staff at Edge Hill ensure that all students are receiving the best possible help, making sure all individuals are comfortable and happy in their environment of study 🙇🏻‍♀️📖👩🏻‍🎓

It is a great way to relax and refresh not forgetting the luxury of having our very own university gym, which is so useful and ideal for students to keep fit and healthy! Another way to relax on campus is socialising and having costa coffee catch-ups in the hub with friends. For Medicine placements, we have supervisors we can contact, and an educational lead. My experience with both has been fantastic, and we regularly meet with both for weekly debriefs (which can be another place to discuss anything difficult), discuss our portfolio, and update on what has went well. In addition to this, there is are University-based personal academic tutors and student support leads on the Medicine programme. They can be contacted in addition to the aforementioned staff on placement, and are happy to meet virtually or face-to-face regarding any issues we may have. They are always happy and willing to talk to us, and the staff of the medical school as a whole understand that working in healthcare can be a stressful time and we may see some upsetting scenarios. The team in charge of placements can also be contacted if there are any issues relating to placement or also if there have been difficult things we have seen on placement. We have a Wellbeing lead and Safeguarding lead on the programme, who you can contact if you ever feel is appropriate. They, in addition to the student support leads and personal academic tutor, can be spoken to in the pre-clinical years. In addition to this, there is the university-wide Wellbeing, Inclusion, and other support teams you can contact at any point throughout your time here at Edge Hill if you ever face any difficulties. Overall, there's been so many people I can turn to for support in my time here at Edge Hill, and staff are always willing to help and support us!

Get involved with the student life team through the edge hill portal as there are so many events you can attend and get involved with as a university student-it’s great fun! Also, UniSkills is something you should definitely make use of, which is based in the library- if you’re struggling with anything like academic reading or writing, they can provide amazing resources and support to help you with resolving any of your academic issues and more! 📚

As a second-year student at Edge Hill University, I would advise prospective students to fully embrace the campus community and get involved in extracurricular activities. Join clubs or societies that interest you, as it's a great way to meet people and make friends. Also, don't hesitate to seek out support from the student support services and utilise the resources available for your studies. Time management is key, so try to strike a balance between your coursework and personal life. Lastly, explore the beautiful surroundings of Ormskirk and beyond, there's a lot to see and experience in the part of the city of Liverpool.

My biggest advice would be to get involved on the Student Life Portal! Not enough students know about it! This is where all the events at the university and in surrounding areas are. It’s really nice way to see all the things going on to ensure you don’t miss out on fun events and opportunities to meet people, as well as free trips! Things I’ve got involved with recently on the Student Life Portal on campus have been, Paint and Sip event at the Red Bar, Trip to the Lake District and IKEA and a poetry slam held at the Arts Centre :) But there is all sorts on there, there is defiantly something for everyone!

I have a part-time job alongside my studies which keeps me busy during the week. In my spare time I enjoy going to the bars and restaurants around Ormskirk as well as exploring Liverpool. The O2 and M&S bank arena are great spots for live music, Lark Lane offers loads of independent restaurants and Smithdown Rd has a lovely pottery café if you fancy something different. Liverpool is only half an hour away on the train so I definitely recommend visiting!

I attend a couple of societies for example the Sign Language society as well as the Uniboob society which have weekly meetings as well as socials - which is where people from the society meet up and often go out. In my free time I enjoy going to the bars and restaurants in Ormskirk (for example, the Old post office, Cabo, Lime Tiger) as well as spending time with my friends in our student houses. Ormskirk is only a half an hour train away from Liverpool so we also enjoy going to Liverpool for shopping and food as well as Manchester. We have also visited Southport and Formby for a day at the beach. University is a great time to start a hobby as there are so many societies and clubs. I enjoy going to the University gym which is such a good deal as it is only around £90 (this may change from year to year) for the whole year including classes, meaning you are able to attend classes and try new things for free once you have the membership. I also enjoy swimming which is also included:) There is so much going on and a lot to try!

Most weekends I spend my time with friends whether that’s going into Ormskirk and having a drink and chat in one of the cafes or going for a nice meal at Nordico Lounge. Sometimes on weekends or evenings I’ll go to Southport and watch a film with a friend. On days off during the week a lot of the time me and some friends will get the train into Liverpool and do some shopping. However, for spare time during the week this can include on Tuesday evenings I meet up with one of my friends for a couple of hours and we’ll sit in the library and read and have a little chat. On most Thursdays I’ll go to the Lost & Found with course mates and we’ll take part in the quiz. Lastly, I try to go to the gym at least once a week and in any extra spare time that’s not socialising I’ll likely be in the hub or the library catching up on any assignments.

When the studying is done, I love to meet up with friends. A group of us love to get together to play some board games or card games. There’s plenty of board games available, but I love the chaos that “Exploding Kittens” brings! There’s plenty of cafes around campus and that’s where most of my friends and I meet. I love coffee so it’s great to catch up with friends over an affordable latte. I also love going to the pub quiz at our SU bar - I don’t drink but I enjoy it nonetheless . The Arts Centre on campus is fantastic. I go there with a few friends to watch shows (there’s around 2 each week at least). They have everything from musicals and plays (performed by not only students, but groups on UK tours) to comedy nights (even celebrities come to perform!) And the best part? Most of the performances are completely free for students! I’ve enjoyed many nights there free of charge, and I’ve never seen a show ticket cost more than £10 for a student (usually for celebrity performances). If you want to know a bit more about something I’ve mentioned, ask away! Ask any of us what else we get up to in our free time. There’s always something going on around campus, including Crafternoons, Free Film Fridays, and so much more!

The best thing about the societies that I’m involved in is the friends that you make attending them. I’m part of the walking society, and if I hadn’t joined I would’ve never met one of the girls that I’m living with next year in second year. It’s also lovely to get out and about in the surrounding areas around uni, such as the Lake District and Delamere Forest. I also do a Politics podcast with three of my coursemates, and by doing so we have all really bonded and created something that could potentially win us a scholarship in June.

As a mature student it can be a worry that you won’t have things in common with other students but it’s not the case. The best thing about the societies is a shared common interest with likeminded people, especially in semester one. It’s also good to have interests outside of classes to give your brain some time off. This is even more important as deadlines approach.

I am mainly involved with the Sustainability Sociey as I am the secretary of it, and the best part about being involved with the society is feeling like we are working towards an active goal to help make things better on campus and within the community. It's a lovely atmosphere to be in a room surrounded by people who are passionate about sustainability and have many ideas about how to make things better. I am also a member of the Biosciences society which has an extremely broad range of activities and events on offer, from revision sessions to practice presentations and talks given from members of staff regarding their research. Similarly to the Sustainability Society, it's a lovely atmosphere to be in a room with like minded people in the Queer society, which I am also a member of. The uni is very supportive of LGBT students and recently held a Queer prom, attended by almost all members of the Queer society! I am sometimes involved with the Horticulture society as well, which holds weekly plant exchanges and health tips, and recently have had weekly presentations on helping students who may not have a background in plant identification in expanding their skills in being able to ID plants out in the field.

Try to shop at a cheap supermarket. I usually do my main shop at Aldi then I will go to B&M to pick up anything else during the week. Also try to prepare lunch in advance so you don’t have to spend out on campus.

My simplest tip for saving money is to only spend money when you really need too. Prioritise your essentials over everything else. So food, transport, and toiletries. In terms of spending money on luxuries like going out or eating takeaways or going to restaurants I would really recommend getting a job. I’ve only gotten a job at the end of first year, but if I had gotten a job at the start of the year I would’ve been able to be less careful about how much money I was spending etcetera. There’s always jobs in bartending and the food industry around Ormskirk.

1. Get accustomed to the food here in the UK. Buying and keeping up with the food from your country might be too costly. 2. Try charity shops. The money spent there is used for charity and you could get good quality for really low prices. 3. Plan your travels and trips. Use the buses and trains more. You can save costs with day ticket savers for both. 4. Have a budget for bills, spendings, rent and plan. 5. Save more, spend less.

My top tips for saving money at university would be: - Eat in as much as possible. Packed lunches are such a good option when money saving. - Do some research into easy, cheap and tasty meals at university and you will find some that would for you. My favourites are chilli con carne, beans on toast and pasta : ) - Don’t drink a lot of alcohol at bars. Drinking out can be really expensive. My advice if you want to drink would be to either have a drink before heading out or just have a few. Lime and soda are such an amazing and cheap alternative to alcohol and are so much cheaper. No one will even know! I always have had lime and soda nights out when money has been tight :) - Try to be flexible about brands, Aldi’s own brand is fabulous. - Consider getting involved in free activities at uni. Not every social occasion has to be super expensive! Edge Hills Student Life Portal can be used to find out about all the fun and free events we have going on campus:) For example, I recently attended a free Comedy Night at Edge Hill with my friends with I really enjoyed and was something a bit different. Look out for things like this you can get involved in on the portal. Student Life also arrange free trips which are amazing to get involved in! Examples of last year's trips included Ikea, the Trafford Centre and the Lake District. These can be such fun days out where you don’t have to spend much! The gym have the gym classes which are a fun thing to do with friends or on your own which are included in your gym membership. - Speak to our Money Advice team. They are fab and can help with all things saving from banking, budgeting and funding. You can also chat to them if you are having money worries and they will do their best to support you. They can give you more information about our Student Support fund which can be granted as an emergency support to students facing financial difficulty. : )

One thing I wish I had known before starting at Edge Hill is that no matter if you live off campus or no you will still get the same amount of support and welcome. Also that Edge Hill is a community and one that becomes part of your extended family. I was worried about not making friends and that everyone would be younger than me. But that was not the case at all I felt so at home as soon as I met everyone. Tutors made the transition smooth between A levels and university. These is a wide range of different support in the catalyst if you need any help at all. As there are so many opportunities available it can sometimes feel daunting but don’t be afraid to try something new. Another recommendation would be to take advantage of all the free opportunities available to you this could be getting a free art membership which allowed for me to see Russel Kane for free or going to the Free Film Fridays which became a weekly routine for me and my friends. Or even the woman’s free fitness classes that are twice a week are a great way to get active if you don’t wish to join the gym. Lastly, I would say bring all the fancy dress clothes you own because at socials there is always some wacky theme.

Outside of campus, Ormskirk has a selection of bars and nightclubs to choose from with different venues having specific student nights on various days of the week. Nights out in Ormskirk have a special charm to them as you always meet loads of people you know and it gives you the chance to catch up with the people you haven't seen for a long time. Liverpool nights out are also a popular option for students at Edge Hill as there is an almost unlimited choice of bars and nightclubs to go when in the Liverpool city centre. It’s fab and so friendly. It is really affordable. This year I think it was £90 for the year which is so cheap compared to other gyms where you pay around £25 a month! As a university student in Ormskirk, I've found that there are actually quite a few things to do around here. First and foremost, the Edge Hill University campus is a great place to relax and explore. There are a bunch of buildings and areas to check out, and I love learning about the history of the university. When I'm looking to venture beyond the campus, there are a few options. I can go shopping in town, whether I'm in need of groceries or want to browse clothing or unique finds at independent boutiques. I've also taken the train into Liverpool a few times - it's an easy trip and the city has so much to offer. One of my favorite things to do in the area is walk or cycle in the West Lancashire countryside. It's absolutely stunning, and there are plenty of routes to explore. I've also checked out the farmer's market on the second Saturday of the month - it's a great place to pick up fresh produce and support local vendors. When I'm in the mood for a night out with friends, there are a variety of pubs and bars in town where we can grab a drink and socialize. And throughout the year, there are plenty of events on the calendar - I've attended music festivals, food festivals, and Christmas markets. Finally, if I'm looking to get more involved on campus and meet new people, Edge Hill University has a ton of clubs and societies to choose from. I've joined a sports team and a drama group, and it's been a great way to connect with other students who share my interests

There are LOTS of local businesses - there is a sustainability and ethics focused shop called the Bloom and Brew, there's also an amazing food place called Cobble. There's a neat vintage store too called ASAP Vintage. There's three nightclubs in the town: Alpine, Liquid and Styles, with Alpine being the most popular. Coronation Park is really not a far walk at all from the centre and has a lovely pond and is very biodiverse. All of the events are held there, I think there's an annual medieval festival held there, which is pretty cool! And of course, there is a Wetherspoons, which is important to know for any uni student. Overall, it's a quiet town with many local businesses to support, however Ruff Woods and by extension Ruff Lane is perhaps my favourite thing about Ormskirk that doesn't involve shopping, it really is a lovely walk.

They helped me move into more suitable accommodation, installed a cord in my room to alert First-Aiders if I have a seizure, and even gave me a tabletop oven so I can cook. They have supported me tremendously, more so than I could have ever imagined when deciding where I wanted to study, and I am very grateful.

Is it easy to make friends?

BSc in Geoenvironmental Hazards

I would say yes especially when you’re a fresher there are lots of different events that are put on to give you the opportunity to meet people. Such as fresher’s week, joining societies, sport teams and going to the campus connector events. However, there are still plenty of opportunities to meet people in your second and third year such as if you’ve taken a new module this is a great way of meeting new people or where you live and there is still the opportunity to join societies or sports teams. I would say don’t stress if you don’t make that friend you connect with straight away as it can take time. If you are struggling at making friends at any part during your degree, there are lots of events put on by the campus connectors which you can join to make friends (Blackpool light switch on, trip to IKEA, learn to cook series). There is always the student support team as well!

To many, this may be one of your biggest fears when choosing to come to university (I know it was definitely one of mine). However, the nature of university life means the process of socialising and friend making is entirely natural and a lot easier than other experiences you may of had. During welcome week especially, you are given multiple opportunities for this to happen, from Freshers events to course taster sessions, or even just socialising in your flat, you are bound to find people you click with some where. That's another positive of university life - due to the independence of being able to choose what you do with your day, the friends you make will be naturally build through your lifestyle choices. This means that the people you meet will already have some things in common with you!

PGCE in Secondary Physical Education with QTS

Yeah it is easy to make friends! A good recommendation is when you begin if you live on campus to keep an open door policy at the start so people can pass by and say hello. Also might be good to bring something like cakes as an ice breaker or have a night in to begin with to get to know each other better. Additionally if your off campus join societies and get to know people well of your course as it’s likely you will have similar interests

What are your favourite places on campus and why?

BA (Hons) in Primary Education with QTS

At Edge Hill University, there are many different buildings and facilities that I love to use. One of my favourite places on campus is the catalyst. This building is home to our library and learning services and is open 24/7 during term time. The library has 4 different levels each with a different noise level with the ground floor being for group study and the top floor being complete silent study. There is also a roof top garden on the top floor which I like to go to to look at the whole campus from up high. The catalyst help desk is open 8am - 8pm during the week and 10am - 6pm at weekends. The helpdesk have been very helpful with scheduling me appointments with the different teams and also know everything there is to know. The inclusion and wellbeing team are also based in the catalyst and I have loved accessing these support teams as they have really helped me to settle into university, as well as the money advice team who have helped with financial issues and getting a part time job. As well as these services, there is also a cafe to grab a snack or drink from during a study session which is open during the day. Another of my favourite places on campus is the sports centre. Students pay only £90 for the whole year to use the fitness suite, pool, saunas and all the sports facilities. I love to exercise and having access to all these facilities for a cheap price has been very good. As I am a commuter student, I like to get to campus when the sports centre opens and work out before I start my day and it helps me mentally as well as physically. With my membership, I also have access to all the fun, vibrant exercise classes on offer. The Arts Centre is another one of my favourite places. I love to watch shows and most shows are free for students. At edge hill, we have 2 theatres - the studio theatre and the rose theatre. Our performing arts societies put on performances in these theatres and family and friends are invited to watch these to help raise money for the societies. Often, guest speakers, comedians and other famous performers have come to perform in these theatres. The red bar in the arts centre has been used by the students union this year whilst the new SU building is under construction, so we have still been able to have all our weekly events put on the SU. As an education student, I spend a lot of time in the faculty of education lakeside building. The classrooms are set out like primary school classrooms so it has inspired me to see how my future classroom could look. As well as our amazing classrooms, we have ‘roots’ - a café which sells vegan and vegetarian food during the day for commuters or students studying in FOE buildings (although anyone can buy food from anywhere on campus).
