Food Science and Bioresource Technology research takes an integrated approach to value-added utilization of agricultural commodities, targeting both food and industrial products. We have leading edge research programs in food microbiology and food safety, food processing, food chemistry and functionality, functional foods and nutraceuticals, carcass and meat science, sensory and consumer science, and bioresource technology.Food Science and Bioresource Technology research takes an integrated approach to value-added utilization of agricultural commodities, targeting both food and industrial products. We have leading edge research programs in food microbiology and food safety, food processing, food chemistry and functionality, functional foods and nutraceuticals, carcass and meat science, sensory and consumer science and bioresource technology. Research addresses consumer demand for nutritious, safe, high quality foods and beverages, develops novel food processing technologies, creates innovative food and industrial products, and develops valuable bioproducts from agricultural commodities and waste.

For the PhD program, the Departments minimum admission requirements are a Masters degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. Exceptional students may be admitted directly from a bachelors degree.English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the University of Alberta, and all applicants must be proficient in English before admission. International applicants must be able to demonstrate (ELP) at the time of application. You can demonstrate ELP in several ways, including education, examination and secondary school coursework.
