The Mathematics Major provides students with several options to explore their interests. A common foundation in core courses allows students to explore various aspects of the discipline, while specializations allow students to investigate in depth as meets their interests. Mathematics is one of the oldest disciplines and it permeates other areas of study like science, medicine, and engineering. Within the Department there are four main themes: Pure and Applied Mathematics, the theoretical foundation for modern Mathematics and its uses in other fields of study Statistics and Data Analysis, the study and implementation of tools to understand quantitative data Actuarial Sciences, the study of risk and the use of mathematical tools to manage that risk and Mathematics Teacher Education, the study and implementation of how mathematical knowledge is propagated.
