Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. You can become one of America’s great social studies teachers who help to present a well-rounded view of society to your students. Students can also choose to continue their education to pursue roles in educational administration. The Integrated Social Studies Education major leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Approved by the Ohio Department of Education, this program prepares graduates to teach students in grades 7-12 in the areas of Social Studies. In addition to meeting the requirements of the Miami Plan, students take courses in Social Studies and Educational Psychology. During their study, students observe and participate in urban and suburban/rural classrooms, culminating in a 15-week, full-time student teaching experience in which they work closely with mentor teachers in high schools or middle schools, eventually assuming instructional responsibilities for all classes.
