The Mathematics sequence in the Mathematics major first provides students with a strong foundation in Mathematics and then gives students the flexibility to explore various aspects of the discipline. Mathematics is one of the oldest disciplines and it permeates other areas of study like science, medicine, and engineering. Within the Department there are four main themes: Pure and Applied Mathematics, the theoretical foundation for modern Mathematics and its uses in other fields of study Statistics and Data Analysis, the study and implementation of tools to understand quantitative data Actuarial Sciences, the study of risk and the use of mathematical tools to manage that risk and Mathematics Teacher Education, the study and implementation of how mathematical knowledge is propagated.
