As the broadest field of engineering, mechanical engineering drives innovation in nearly every industry - from aerospace, automotive and energy to manufacturing, robotics and biotechnology. In University of Idaho’s mechanical engineering program, you’ll learn to apply math, science, programming and engineering principles. You’ll learn to design, analyze and optimize machines, energy systems and processes that address complex real-world challenges. Through our nationally recognized interdisciplinary capstone program, hands-on work, team-based design projects and extensive internship and cooperative education opportunities, you’ll gain the practical experience and professional connections needed to launch a successful career in a wide range of industries. As a mechanical engineering student, you can also pursue specialized undergraduate certificates in areas such as aerospace, robotics and automation, sustainable energy systems, and advanced manufacturing. These certificates allow you to tailor your expertise to your area of interest. Beyond the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to join student clubs, such as the Aerospace Club, which competes in the AIAA Design, Build, Fly Competition, and Vandal Motorsports, which participates in the SAE Baja competition. You can also participate in undergraduate research, collaborating with faculty on cutting-edge projects that prepare you for graduate study or careers at the forefront of innovation. Most importantly, the program equips you not only with technical knowledge but also with the ability to continually acquire new skills, adapt to emerging technologies, and solve future problems as a lifelong engineer.
